Lisa Grossman

Bio

Lisa Grossman was born in 1967 and grew up in rural western Pennsylvania. She earned an associate’s degree in Visual Communication at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh and in 1988, moved to Kansas City to work as an illustrator in Hallmark Cards, Inc. Grossman soon encountered the Tallgrass prairies of the Flint Hills and began exploring and painting them. After seven years at Hallmark, Grossman quit to return to school—spending year at Johnson Co. Community College, then transferring to the University of Kansas (KU) in 1996 and setting up home in Lawrence. She earned a BFA at KU and has made a career of painting and printmaking since her first solo show in 1998 at Dolphin gallery, now Haw/Contemporary, in Kansas City. Her prairie and Kansas River work has appeared in 30 solo shows around the country and over 1600 of her works have found their way into private homes, corporations, schools, libraries, hospitals, museums, and one football stadium. Grossman is a 2019 Phoenix Award recipient, an honor from the City of Lawrence for artistic achievement. She’s an 8-time artist-in-resident in our national parks including a 2017 Voices of the Wilderness artist-in-residency with the US Forest Service kayak rangers in Tracy Arm/Fords Terror Wilderness in Southeast Alaska. She volunteers with local conservation groups and applies her work to their advocacy efforts.
