This recent body of work deepens my exploration in saturated color, transparency, opacity, density and weight in sheared planes of industrial felt, and woodcut prints. As with previous work, I focus on edges, rhythmic intervals and sequences, and tactile surfaces that build layers in print and dimensional planes. These works are informed by the intense color of Navajo blankets, of children’s blocks, and elemental architectural Shapes.
While in residencies this past year at Constellation Studios in Lincoln, Nebraska, I focused on woodcut reduction prints. The ellipse found in many of the prints was inspired by the Sheldon Museum of Art, where golden ovals punctuate the column bays of the exterior ceiling overhang.
My ongoing interest in geometric abstraction and spatial relationships is pushed by pairs of minimal forms, side by side. The absorptive silence and stillness of the sculpture contrasts with the light transparency of the monoprints. The slow, incremental processes of building with a singular form is a similar impulse whether it is through a strata of felt or the repetition of overlaid, inked shapes. Overall, I look to reveal a shifting sense of order and balance with my intuitive response to site, place and memory.
