Ken Wood is an American artist and printmaker whose paintings, prints, drawings, and mixed-media works explore language as both a carrier of meaning and a visual form. Words, letters, fragments of text, symbols, diagrams, and repeated marks move through his compositions, where reading and looking become intertwined. Rather than treating language simply as content, Wood investigates the physical and visual properties of written communication—how a word occupies space, how meaning changes through repetition and fragmentation, and what happens when language begins to function as abstraction.
Wood's work is grounded in both painting and printmaking, disciplines that allow him to approach images through processes of layering, reversal, repetition, transfer, erasure, and accumulation. His surfaces frequently retain evidence of their construction: marks overlap, words disappear beneath subsequent layers, and recognizable forms emerge only to dissolve again into the larger composition.
Language has long provided a central structure for this work. Handwritten phrases, typographic elements, invented signs, fragments of conversation, and literary references appear across paintings and prints, but they rarely resolve into straightforward messages. Wood is interested in the unstable territory between legibility and illegibility. Viewers may begin by attempting to read a work before becoming increasingly aware of letters and words as shapes, rhythms, textures, and spatial events.
This tension reflects a broader interest in communication and its inevitable imperfections. Language promises precision, yet meaning continually shifts according to context, memory, interpretation, and the person receiving it. Wood's compositions exploit these uncertainties. A phrase can simultaneously convey information and function as pattern; a recognizable word can be obscured until only its visual structure remains; repeated marks can suggest a system without revealing exactly how that system should be decoded.
Printmaking is particularly suited to these concerns. Wood has worked extensively with monotype, lithography, relief, and other print processes whose inherent qualities of transfer and repetition parallel the circulation of language itself. Images can be copied, reversed, layered, altered, and reproduced, yet each iteration introduces differences. His prints embrace this tension between multiplicity and uniqueness, control and accident.
Wood's paintings extend these processes into larger and more physically direct surfaces. Painted and drawn marks coexist with printed imagery, while areas of dense activity are balanced against quieter passages. The works frequently possess an improvisational energy while retaining an underlying compositional structure. Their visual complexity rewards sustained attention, as words, images, and gestures gradually reveal themselves within layers of material.
His exhibition titles often provide clues to the linguistic concerns within the work. Scripta Volant (Written Words Fly) draws upon the Latin expression verba volant, scripta manent—spoken words fly away, written words remain—while simultaneously questioning the presumed permanence of written language. Me I'm Just Typing, Each to Other, Writ Large, and Snakes and Ladders similarly suggest communication, translation, scale, exchange, and the movement of information through systems.
Wood's 2019 Haw Contemporary exhibition Gemelli extended these investigations through paintings and works on paper that explored doubling, pairing, reflection, and relationships between forms. The Italian word gemelli, meaning twins, offered an organizing principle for compositions in which similarity and difference coexist. Repeated structures and related forms operate less as exact duplicates than as variations—visual counterparts that change through context and proximity.
Wood has exhibited widely throughout the United States. Solo exhibitions include Gemelli at Haw Contemporary, Kansas City; Writ Large at the William and Florence Schmidt Art Center, Belleville, Illinois; Me I'm Just Typing at The Courtyard House Presents, Brooklyn; Snakes and Ladders at Sidney Larson Gallery, Columbia, Missouri; Each to Other at Fort Gondo Compound for the Arts, St. Louis; and Scripta Volant (Written Words Fly) at The Print Center in Philadelphia.
His work has also been presented at the International Print Center New York; Turner Print Museum, Chico, California; Normal Editions Workshop, Illinois; The Luminary, St. Louis; Manifest Gallery, Cincinnati; Big Medium, Austin; Flatbed Press and Gallery, Austin; Art on Paper in New York; and Aqua Art Miami, among other venues.
Wood's paintings and prints are held in corporate, institutional, and private collections including Rice University, Polsinelli, Twitter, STL VentureWorks, Sun City Tower in Kobe, Japan, and Norwegian Cruise Line, among others.
His work and writing have appeared in publications including Art in Print, Graphic Impressions, Create Magazine, Number: An Independent Arts Journal, The HAND Magazine, Mid America Print Council Journal, and Fresh Paint Magazine. His engagement with printmaking extends beyond his studio practice through teaching, workshops, collaborative printing, and participation in the broader national print community.
Wood received his BA from Rice University in Houston and his MFA from Tyler School of Art, completing portions of his graduate study in Philadelphia and Rome. The experience of working in Italy contributed to an ongoing engagement with language, historical imagery, and the ways visual culture moves across periods and places.
Wood is Professor of Printmaking and Foundations at St. Louis Community College–Meramec. As both an artist and educator, he continues to investigate the territory where image and language overlap—where words can be seen as much as read, images can behave like sentences, and the familiar systems through which people communicate become material for abstraction.
