Ken Wood Bio
Ken Wood is an American artist and printmaker whose paintings, prints, drawings, and mixed-media works explore the relationship between language, image, and abstraction. Words, letters, fragments of text, symbols, and repeated marks move through his compositions, where reading and looking become intertwined. Rather than treating language simply as content, Wood investigates its physical and visual properties, examining how meaning shifts through repetition, fragmentation, and the transformation of written communication into visual form. Working across painting and printmaking, Wood employs processes of layering, reversal, transfer, erasure, and accumulation. His surfaces retain evidence of their construction as marks overlap, words disappear beneath subsequent layers, and recognizable forms emerge and dissolve within larger compositions. Handwritten phrases, typographic elements, and invented signs rarely resolve into straightforward messages. Instead, they occupy an uncertain territory between legibility and abstraction, inviting viewers to experience language as shape,… Read more

Instead, they occupy an uncertain territory between legibility and abstraction, inviting viewers to experience language as shape, rhythm, texture, and spatial structure.
Printmaking plays a central role in this investigation. Wood has worked extensively with monotype, lithography, relief, and other processes whose qualities of repetition and transfer parallel the circulation of language itself. His paintings extend these concerns into larger, more physically direct surfaces, balancing improvisational gestures with underlying compositional structures. Across both disciplines, his work explores the tension between control and accident, communication and ambiguity, and the familiar and the unfamiliar.
Wood's 2019 solo exhibition at Haw Contemporary, Gemelli, explored doubling, pairing, and relationships between forms through paintings and works on paper. In 2026, he returns to the gallery with Betweenity (December 4–30), a series of fifteen large-scale diptychs combining collagraph and relief printing. The works extend his investigation of repetition, variation, and the relationships between forms, using the paired format to explore connections and differences within a unified composition.
Wood has exhibited widely throughout the United States. Solo exhibitions include Writ Large at the William and Florence Schmidt Art Center, Me I'm Just Typing at The Courtyard House Presents in Brooklyn, Snakes and Ladders at Sidney Larson Gallery, Each to Other at Fort Gondo Compound for the Arts, and Scripta Volant (Written Words Fly) at The Print Center in Philadelphia. His work has also been presented at the International Print Center New York, The Luminary, Flatbed Press and Gallery, Art on Paper, and Aqua Art Miami, among other venues.
His work is held in corporate, institutional, and private collections including Rice University, Polsinelli, Twitter, STL VentureWorks, Sun City Tower in Kobe, Japan, and Norwegian Cruise Line. His work and writing have appeared in Art in Print, Create Magazine, The HAND Magazine, Number: An Independent Arts Journal, and other publications.
Wood received his BA from Rice University and his MFA from Tyler School of Art, completing portions of his graduate study in Philadelphia and Rome. He is Professor of Printmaking and Foundations at St. Louis Community College–Meramec, where his engagement with printmaking extends beyond his studio practice through teaching and collaborative work.
