Bio

Born in 1967 in rural western Pennsylvania, Lisa Grossman is an acclaimed painter and printmaker whose work deeply explores the American landscape. After earning an associate’s degree in Visual Communication from the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, she relocated to Kansas City in 1988 to work as an illustrator for Hallmark Cards, Inc. It was during this time that she encountered the vast Tallgrass prairies of the Flint Hills—a landscape that would profoundly reorient her artistic trajectory.

After seven years with Hallmark, Grossman left to pursue her fine art education, ultimately earning a BFA from the University of Kansas (KU) in Lawrence, where she has since established her home and studio. Since her debut solo exhibition in 1998, Grossman’s evocative depictions of the prairie and the Kansas River have been featured in solo shows nationwide. Her work is held in private, corporate, and public collections, including museums, libraries, hospitals, and an NFL stadium. A dedicated conservationist, Grossman frequently collaborates with local environmental groups, using her art to champion advocacy efforts. She is a 2019 recipient of the City of Lawrence’s Phoenix Award for artistic achievement and an eight-time National Parks Artist-in-Residence, which includes a notable 2017 Voices of the Wilderness residency alongside US Forest Service kayak rangers in Alaska.
