Andy Brayman is an artist and designer whose work brings together ceramics, industrial manufacturing, digital technology, and traditional craft. Andy Brayman is an artist and designer whose work brings together ceramics, industrial manufacturing, digital technology, and traditional craft. Working with both handmade processes and computationally controlled machines, Brayman explores how objects can carry information about the systems, environments, and technologies through which they are produced. His vessels are often immediately beautiful and functional in appearance, while the processes behind them reveal a more complex investigation of authorship, data, repetition, and the relationship between human and machine.

Trained as a ceramic artist, Brayman became interested early in his career in adapting industrial technologies to the studio. Rather than treating digital fabrication simply as a more efficient means of production, he uses technology as an active component of the creative process. He designs and builds custom tools and computer-controlled machines that can respond to data, environmental conditions, or programmed instructions, allowing information that would otherwise remain invisible to become physically embedded in an object.

In works such as his Succession series, environmental data becomes part of the decorative structure of ceramic vessels. Changes in temperature, humidity, atmospheric conditions, or other variables can determine aspects of a work's surface, pattern, or production, creating objects that function simultaneously as ceramics and records of particular conditions in time. Other projects investigate industrial repetition and variation, deliberately introducing difference into processes normally designed to produce identical objects.

This combination of craft and computation places Brayman's work within a broader reconsideration of what it means to make an object in an era of digital fabrication. Although his studio employs robotics, custom software, sensors, and automated systems, the resulting work remains grounded in the material intelligence of ceramics. Clay, glaze, heat, gravity, and chance continue to resist complete control, creating an ongoing negotiation between precision and unpredictability.

In 2005, Brayman founded The Matter Factory in Kansas City, a studio, laboratory, and small-scale manufacturing facility where he develops his own work while researching new tools and production methods.

At Haw Contemporary, Brayman has presented New Works (2016), Show Room (2019), and Material Forward (2026). He was also included in Architecture of Touch (2015), a three-person exhibition with Sanam Emami and Del Harrow. These presentations reflect the continuing evolution of a practice situated between functional ceramics, sculpture, industrial production, computation, and contemporary craft.

Brayman's work is held in significant museum collections, including the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, D.C., and the Museum of Arts and Design, New York.

Brayman received a BA in Sociology and a BFA in Ceramics from the University of Kansas in 1996 and an MFA in Ceramics from the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University in 1998.
