Archie Scott Gobber is an American artist whose paintings, sculptures, prints, and public works examine the power of language and symbols to shape cultural, social, and political meaning. For more than three decades, Gobber has transformed familiar words, phrases, logos, signs, and graphic conventions into tightly constructed visual objects that operate somewhere between painting, typography, advertising, and public declaration.

Language is both the subject and material of Gobber's work. Words are cropped, mirrored, repeated, stacked, disguised, or altered through subtle shifts in spelling and context. A phrase may initially register as a familiar slogan or graphic design before revealing a second meaning, contradiction, joke, or provocation. His works depend on the viewer's instinctive ability to read while simultaneously slowing that process down and forcing attention back onto the visual structure of language itself.

Gobber draws freely from the visual vocabulary of American public life: commercial signage, political campaigns, road signs, advertising, corporate logos, flags, religious symbols, and popular graphic design. He appropriates the authority and immediacy of these forms while disrupting the messages they ordinarily deliver. Humor is central to this strategy. Puns, double meanings, substitutions, and visual jokes allow seemingly simple works to open onto larger questions about politics, religion, consumer culture, identity, power, and belief.

The tension between reading and looking is particularly important. In Gobber's work, a word is never simply information. Letterforms become shapes, spacing becomes composition, and language acquires a physical presence. The viewer may understand a word instantly but continue looking as its visual and conceptual implications unfold.

At Haw Contemporary, Gobber has presented the solo exhibitions ARCHIE SCOTT GOBBER HAS ISSUES (2015), Amateur Content (2018), Just Desserts (2020), Last Resort (2022), and READY FIRE AIM (2025). Together, these exhibitions document more than a decade of his evolving engagement with language, politics, humor, cultural anxiety, and the visual authority of words. He has also appeared in numerous Haw group exhibitions, including 9, Master Graphics, Every Street, Loose Group, everyday, and Natural Law.

Gobber's work is held in significant museum collections including the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, and Spencer Museum of Art. The Nelson-Atkins has acquired his painting Piece.

His public commissions include Dream, a permanent sculptural installation commissioned for Missouri Bank and Trust Company in Kansas City, which received an American Institute of Architects Allied Arts and Craftsmanship Honor Award in 2011.

In 2017, Gobber was an Artist in Residence at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. He was among the first recipients of the Charlotte Street Foundation Visual Artist Award in 1998 and has taught at the Kansas City Art Institute and served as a mentor to emerging artists.

Gobber received his BFA in Painting from the Kansas City Art Institute in 1988. He lives and works in Kansas City, Missouri.
