Armin Mühsam is a German-American artist whose paintings, drawings, collages, and constructions investigate architecture, abstraction, landscape, and the systems through which people organize and transform physical space. Characterized by precise geometry, shifting perspectives, and carefully controlled color, his work creates invented environments that hover between architectural proposal, modernist abstraction, and impossible landscape.
Architecture has remained a central reference throughout Mühsam's work, but he approaches it less as a subject to be depicted than as a language to be dismantled and reconstructed. Buildings, plans, grids, façades, structural fragments, and perspectival systems are reduced to geometric elements and recombined into spaces that appear plausible at first glance but cannot actually exist.
His paintings and collages engage with the visual legacy of twentieth-century modernism, particularly Constructivism, De Stijl, the Bauhaus, geometric abstraction, and modernist architecture. Yet Mühsam's relationship to that history is deliberately ambivalent. The utopian promise of modernism—the belief that rational design and ordered space might produce a better society—is continually disrupted by visual contradictions, impossible structures, and spatial instability.
Collage plays an important role in this investigation. Mühsam combines painted and printed elements into sharply constructed compositions in which architectural fragments and geometric forms are removed from their original contexts. Scale becomes uncertain, and distinctions between model, building, landscape, and abstract shape begin to collapse.
Landscape has also become an increasingly visible element of Mühsam's practice. Mountains, horizons, vegetation, and other natural forms appear in tension with geometric structures and systems of human intervention. These works extend his longstanding interest in architecture toward broader questions about how people divide, measure, occupy, exploit, and imagine the land.
At Haw Contemporary, Mühsam presented the solo exhibition New Constructs in 2017, devoted to a renewed engagement with collage. In 2018, his paintings were paired with sculpture by Marcie Miller Gross in the two-person exhibition SiteParallels. He joined Gross and Caleb Taylor for EDGE | CUT | PLAY in 2020, and returned for the solo exhibition The Elastic Continuum in 2023.
Mühsam has exhibited extensively in the United States and Europe, with more than fifty solo exhibitions in the United States, Germany, France, Austria, Romania, and Hungary. His work is held in public and institutional collections in both Europe and the United States.
He received his BFA from the University of Applied Sciences in Munich in 1994 and his MFA from Montana State University in 1997. A recipient of a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant, Mühsam has taught at Northwest Missouri State University since 2000. He lives and works in Kansas City.
