Christian Chaize (b. 1960, France) is a French photographer whose work explores time, repetition, perception, and the ways sustained attention can transform our understanding of a familiar place. Working primarily with film and medium- and large-format cameras, Chaize often returns to the same subject over many years, allowing changes in light, weather, season, human activity, and his own perception to become the variables within otherwise carefully controlled bodies of work.
Chaize is best known for Praia Piquinia, an ongoing series begun in 2004 on a small beach on the southern coast of Portugal. Returning from France several times each year, he photographs the beach from essentially the same elevated vantage point, at different hours and under changing conditions. The vertical compositions function less like conventional landscapes than portraits of a place: the geography remains largely constant while tides, weather, color, shadows, umbrellas, towels, and the constantly changing population of beachgoers transform the scene.
Across nearly two decades of photographs, Praia Piquinia becomes an extended study of both constancy and change. Individual images capture a fraction of a second, but viewed together the series makes time itself palpable. The beach becomes a stage on which patterns of human behavior appear and disappear, while the recurring composition allows subtle differences to assume increasing significance. Chaize has compared his relationship to the site to Giorgio Morandi's repeated examination of bottles and vessels or Claude Monet's return to the same subjects under changing conditions.
Praia Piquinia was the subject of Chaize's first monograph, TIME & TIDE, published by Chronicle Books in 2013. The series has been presented in two solo museum exhibitions in Portugal, at the Centro de Artes de Sines and Institut Franco-Portugais in Lisbon, as well as exhibitions internationally. Chaize has continued to return to and photograph the site, extending a project begun in 2004 into a visual record spanning nearly twenty years.
Other bodies of work share this commitment to sustained observation. To Praia Grande expands his investigation of the Portuguese coast, while Paradis, photographed in the Seychelles, examines another environment shaped by the meeting of land, water, and human presence. In the black-and-white series TEN, Chaize repeatedly arranged and photographed a limited group of wooden blocks, using direct-positive and platinum-palladium processes to explore variation within deliberately constrained conditions.
More recently, Chaize has turned his attention to the forest surrounding his home near Lyon. In Praia Proxima, he photographs at night from specific viewpoints, using multiple exposures to construct dense, immersive images of trees, branches, leaves, and light. The project brings the philosophy underlying his earlier work closer to home: rather than seeking extraordinary subjects in distant places, Chaize concentrates on an ordinary environment immediately around him, treating sustained attention itself as a form of discovery.
Chaize's work has been exhibited in France, Portugal, Germany, and the United States and has been featured in publications including The Wall Street Journal Magazine, Architectural Digest, Elle Decor, Collector Daily, and The Collector's Guide to New Art Photography. In 1992, he received the Prix European Panorama de Kodak for Young European Photographer at Les Rencontres d'Arles.
Self-taught as a photographer, Chaize has maintained both fine-art and commercial practices for more than three decades. He lives and works near Lyon, France.
