Davin Watne is an American artist whose multidisciplinary practice examines power, authority, desire, violence, and the systems through which contemporary culture constructs and distributes images. Although painting remains central to his work, Watne moves among sculpture, installation, animation, fashion, and public art, using shifts in medium to investigate how images acquire meaning and how visual culture shapes individual and collective experience.
Watne's work begins with an awareness of what he describes as the "aesthetics of power, authority and desire" produced by governing and cultural systems. Advertising, political imagery, television news, consumer products, automobiles, fashion, and other components of contemporary visual culture provide both subject matter and material. Rather than simply reproducing these images, Watne alters their contexts and relationships, creating visual narratives in which familiar symbols become unstable, threatening, seductive, or absurd.
Darkness has become an especially important element within his recent paintings. Nighttime roads, isolated automobiles, wild animals, accidents, fires, and other scenes appear with cinematic intensity, transforming seemingly ordinary situations into psychologically charged encounters.
The automobile is a recurring presence. In Watne's paintings, roads and vehicles embody both technological progress and its consequences. Cars crash, burn, overturn, or encounter animals displaced by the infrastructure humans have constructed through the natural world. Deer, wolves, mountain lions, and other animals enter these scenes as both actual creatures and allegorical figures.
A parallel body of work examines contemporary news media. Watne slows down the relentlessly changing television and digital news cycle through the deliberately time-consuming process of painting. Politicians, pundits, broadcast graphics, and moments extracted from televised events become fixed images, interrupting the speed with which contemporary media normally produces and discards them.
At Haw Contemporary, Watne presented Picture the Wall in 2017, an installation of thirty-eight paintings forming a ten-foot-tall wall across the gallery and examining the relationship among oil painting, institutional authority, politics, and contemporary imagery. In 2023, Hello Darkness My Old Friend brought together mediated news imagery with nocturnal roads, automobiles, animals, and foreboding landscapes. His work has also appeared in Haw Contemporary group exhibitions including on behalf of one's obsessions, YOU PEOPLE, Summer 2017, Every Street, DECADE, and Natural Law.
Across these bodies of work, Watne resists straightforward political illustration. His paintings rarely instruct viewers what conclusion to reach. Instead, collisions—between animals and machines, desire and danger, information and uncertainty, nature and technology—create situations in which established systems of meaning begin to fracture.
Watne has received significant recognition for his work, including the Charlotte Street Foundation Visual Artist Award and an ArtsKC Inspiration Grant. He was a resident of the Studios Inc. Residency Program and has received support for public projects through the Avenue of the Arts and Art in the Loop programs.
His work is represented in museum and institutional collections including the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art and the RISD Museum.
Watne received his BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute in 1994 and his MFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2013. He teaches painting and drawing at the University of Missouri–Kansas City and lives and works in Kansas City.
