Terry Evans (b. 1944, Kansas City, Missouri) is an American photographer whose work has examined the landscapes of the Great Plains and the American Midwest for more than five decades. Moving between intimate studies of prairie ecology and expansive aerial views of agriculture, industry, cities, and altered land, Evans has created a sustained photographic inquiry into how human history and natural systems coexist within the landscape.
Evans began photographing the prairie in the 1970s while living in Salina, Kansas. At a time when the tallgrass prairie was often regarded as visually empty or culturally peripheral, she became absorbed by its subtle complexity. Her early black-and-white photographs closely examined grasses, roots, insects, soil, fossils, and other elements of prairie ecosystems, treating the landscape not as empty space but as a densely interconnected living system. This sustained attention established the foundation for a practice that would increasingly consider the environmental and cultural forces shaping the American heartland.
In the late 1980s, Evans began photographing from the air, radically expanding both the scale and vocabulary of her work. Seen from above, the prairie and surrounding regions reveal layers of human intervention: agricultural grids, roads, subdivisions, military installations, mines, industrial sites, railways, rivers, and remnants of earlier land use. Her aerial photographs resist simple distinctions between natural and artificial or beautiful and damaged. Instead, they present the contemporary landscape as an accumulation of competing histories and systems, asking viewers to consider both the visual power of these transformations and their environmental consequences.
This tension between reverence for the land and recognition of its alteration runs throughout Evans's work. She has photographed the remnants of native prairie alongside industrial agriculture, military landscapes, oil and gas development, urban expansion, and sites of environmental contamination. Her photographs do not function as straightforward advocacy or condemnation; instead, they describe the complexity of places in which beauty, exploitation, resilience, and damage often coexist.
Evans's projects have ranged geographically and conceptually across the American landscape. Disarming the Prairie examined the former Joliet Army Ammunition Plant in Illinois as it was transformed into the Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie, revealing a landscape shaped simultaneously by military history, industrial use, ecological restoration, and memory. Other projects have examined Chicago and its surrounding region, the mixed-grass prairie of North Dakota, oil development on the Great Plains, and the ecological and cultural histories contained within museum specimens and natural-history collections.
Her work has been the subject of major solo exhibitions at the Art Institute of Chicago; Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City; Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, Washington, D.C.; and Field Museum, Chicago, among other institutions. A major retrospective, Heartland: The Photographs of Terry Evans, organized by the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, surveyed more than thirty years of her work and subsequently traveled to additional museums.
Evans's photographs are held in many of the country's leading museum collections, including the Museum of Modern Art and Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Art Institute of Chicago; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, D.C.; Amon Carter Museum of American Art, Fort Worth; Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City; George Eastman Museum, Rochester; and Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, D.C., among others.
Her work has been published in numerous books and monographs, including Prairie: Images of Ground and Sky, The Inhabited Prairie, Disarming the Prairie, and Heartland: The Photographs of Terry Evans. Her photographs and projects have also been widely published and discussed in writing about American landscape, environmental photography, agriculture, and the Great Plains.
Evans has received numerous awards and fellowships, including a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship. Across more than fifty years of work, she has helped expand the visual understanding of the American prairie from a landscape historically perceived as empty or monotonous into one understood as ecologically intricate, culturally layered, and inseparable from the larger history of the United States.
