Ahram Park

Ahram Park is an artist, photographer, and climber whose practice explores the relationship between the human body and the natural world through photography, performance, intervention, and site-responsive actions. Based in Southern California, Park frequently works in remote landscapes where climbing, walking, physical exertion, and direct encounters with geological formations become both methods of making work and subjects in themselves.

Park's work is rooted in an understanding of landscape as something experienced through the body rather than simply observed from a distance. Mountains, rock formations, deserts, forests, and other natural environments function as active participants in his photographs and interventions. His experience as a climber gives him unusual physical access to these places while shaping an awareness of scale, gravity, risk, friction, balance, and the limits of the body.

Photography occupies a central position in Park's practice, but he frequently uses the camera to document actions performed specifically for an image. Temporary objects and materials are introduced into natural environments, bodies interact with geological surfaces, and subtle interventions alter the viewer's perception of a place. These gestures can be playful, absurd, precarious, or nearly invisible.

Park's interventions often depend upon their temporary nature. Rather than permanently altering a site, he introduces fleeting actions and arrangements that exist primarily through their photographic record. The resulting images occupy a space between landscape photography and performance documentation.

Climbing is particularly significant within this approach. A climber encounters rock through touch, weight, movement, and problem-solving, reading minute variations in a surface as potential routes through space. Park brings this heightened physical awareness into his artistic practice. Geological formations cease to function merely as scenery and instead become surfaces against which the human body measures itself.

Born in South Korea and raised partly in the United States, Park initially studied economics, receiving a bachelor's degree from Kansas State University. He subsequently turned toward photography and contemporary art, earning his MFA from the University of California, Riverside.

At Haw Contemporary, Park presented Friendly Stranger in 2014, developed through journeys into the Kansas countryside and a reconsideration of a landscape he had first encountered years earlier. He returned with Almost Nothing in 2019, an exhibition centered on subtle interventions in the natural environment. Park was also included in the group exhibition something clear in 2020.

His work has been exhibited at Et al. gallery, San Francisco; Human Resources, Los Angeles; Riverside Art Museum; rK Gallery, Berlin; and other venues in the United States and internationally.

Park has taught photography at Chaffey College in California and lives and works in the Los Angeles area.
