Justin Gainan is an American artist whose practice moves between painting, drawing, sculpture, assemblage, and installation. Justin Gainan is an American artist whose practice moves between painting, drawing, sculpture, assemblage, and installation. His work brings together fragments of imagery, objects, marks, and materials in compositions that resist straightforward narrative, instead allowing meaning to emerge through association, interruption, and ambiguity.

Gainan's practice is characterized by a willingness to move between mediums and visual languages. Representational fragments can coexist with abstraction; carefully rendered passages sit alongside rough or provisional marks; and found materials or familiar objects are removed from their expected contexts and placed into new relationships.

This instability between recognition and uncertainty is central to Gainan's work. Rather than resolving an image into a single reading, he allows disparate elements to remain in tension. Humor, unease, familiarity, and estrangement frequently occupy the same work, encouraging viewers to construct connections from visual information that may be deliberately incomplete or contradictory.

Gainan's work developed within both American and European contexts. After studying at the Kansas City Art Institute, he moved to London to attend Goldsmiths, University of London, entering an environment in which conceptual approaches to painting, sculpture, and installation strongly informed his expanding practice.

At Haw Contemporary, Gainan presented the solo exhibition Medium Density Overlay: Split in 2019. The exhibition examined systems of stability and control through carefully structured compositions whose apparent order remained vulnerable to material and environmental instability. He also participated in the gallery's inaugural OPEN exhibition in 2013, on behalf of one's obsessions in 2014–15, Every Street in 2017, Loose Group in 2019, and something clear in 2020.

His work has been exhibited internationally in the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, including presentations at the David Roberts Art Foundation and Tenderpixel in London; Bäckerstrasse4 in Vienna; Van Horbourgh in Zurich; and L'Atelier Kunstspielraum in Berlin.

Gainan received his BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute in 2004 and his MFA from Goldsmiths, University of London, in 2009.
