Miki Baird

Miki Baird (b. 1949, Kansas) is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice is rooted in observation, collection, repetition, and the transformation of overlooked materials and images. Working across photography, sculpture, installation, and works on paper, Baird gathers fragments from everyday experience and reorganizes them into intricate visual structures that reconsider what is ordinarily passed by without notice.

Looking, collecting, archiving, deconstructing, and reconstructing have long been central to Baird's process. Her materials have ranged from iron, steel, bronze, polyurethane, and silicone to discarded objects, junk mail, paper, and thousands of small photographic images. Although her work often begins with recognizable material from daily life, accumulation and repetition gradually detach those fragments from their original contexts. The resulting works occupy an ambiguous territory between photography, painting, sculpture, and textile.

Photography has become particularly important to Baird's practice. For an extended body of work, she photographed the landscape and sky during her daily commute and walks through Kansas City, accumulating images almost as a form of visual note-taking. She then isolated small details—unexpected flashes of color, fragments of architecture or landscape, moments invisible in the larger scene—and repeated, cut, layered, and woven the photographs into larger compositions. These works transform incidental observations into complex structures in which individual images become almost abstract units of color and pattern.

Baird's interest in accumulation also extends to the physical residue of everyday life. Works constructed from shredded junk mail, discarded paper, found objects, and other ephemeral materials treat the things we routinely overlook or throw away as records of experience. Through acts of collecting and reorganization, Baird gives permanence and visual consequence to materials whose original purpose was temporary.

Baird's work gained national recognition through her inclusion in State of the Art: Discovering American Art Now, organized by Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in 2014 and subsequently presented at the Minneapolis Institute of Art and the Frist Center for the Visual Arts in Nashville. She has also presented a solo museum exhibition, Kindred Virtuosities, at the Daum Museum of Contemporary Art, and her work has been exhibited at the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts, and other institutions in the United States and internationally. Haw Contemporary has presented solo exhibitions including read this and remnants and residue.

Her work is held in museum and institutional collections including Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, Bentonville; Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, Overland Park; Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art, Manhattan, Kansas; and the University of Kansas School of Business, as well as numerous corporate and private collections.

Baird was an artist-in-residence at Art Omi in 2016 and has received two ArtsKC Inspiration Grants and a three-year Studios Inc Fellowship through the Brad and Linda Nicholson Foundation. In 2018, she served as artist-in-residence at the University of Kansas Medical Center School of Nursing, where she completed a major permanent commission.

A native of western Kansas, Baird has lived and worked in the Kansas City area since 1987. She received both her BFA and MFA in sculpture from the University of Kansas and taught sculpture and interdisciplinary art at the Kansas City Art Institute from 2000 to 2007.
