Stuart Allen (b. 1970, Wichita, Kansas) is a multidisciplinary artist whose work investigates light, time, space, gravity, and human perception. Moving between photography, sculpture, installation, and public art, Allen creates works that often begin with simple physical phenomena—a shifting shadow, changing light, atmospheric color, movement through space—and use them to question how we see and understand the world around us.
Photography has remained central to Allen's practice throughout his career. His images frequently reduce familiar subjects to their most elemental visual components, emphasizing color, geometry, light, and duration. In series ranging from skies rendered at extremely low resolution to the fleeting surfaces of soap bubbles, Allen draws attention to perceptual experiences that are ordinarily overlooked. Recent photographs made through airplane windows continue this investigation, using the temporary vantage point of flight to transform atmosphere, horizon, clouds, and landscape into fields of color and abstraction.
Allen's sculptural and installation work extends many of the same concerns into physical space. Working at scales ranging from intimate objects to monumental architectural interventions, he creates structures that respond to their surroundings and change according to the viewer's position, available light, weather, and time of day. His background in architecture remains an important influence on this work, particularly in his attention to structure, site, movement, and the relationship between an object and the space around it.
Over a career spanning more than three decades, Allen's work has been included in more than 150 exhibitions in the United States and internationally. Solo museum exhibitions include Dance Lines: Photographs by Stuart Allen at the Crocker Art Museum, Sacramento; 29° 26' 14" N ~ 98° 28' 55" W at the San Antonio Museum of Art; and Kansas: Low Resolution at the Wichita Art Museum. His work has also been exhibited at the Nevada Museum of Art, Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Weisman Art Museum, New Mexico Museum of Art, Hudson River Museum, and Houston Center for Photography, among others. Haw Contemporary presented Allen's solo exhibition Constructive Interference in 2015 and continues to exhibit work from his evolving photographic practice.
Allen's work is represented in public and institutional collections including the Crocker Art Museum; Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas at Austin; di Rosa Center for Contemporary Art; Tokyo Kite Museum; UNESCO Headquarters in Paris; and U.S. Embassy collections in Canada, Bulgaria, Kazakhstan, and the Republic of Georgia.
Public art constitutes another significant part of Allen's practice. He has completed more than twenty permanent site-specific projects across the United States and Canada, including commissions for civic, educational, transportation, and architectural settings. These projects extend his longstanding interest in perception beyond the gallery, creating works whose appearance and experience shift in response to architecture, landscape, light, and the movement of people through a site.
Allen studied architecture at the University of Kansas before earning his degree from the Photography and Video Department at the Kansas City Art Institute. He divides his time between Corrales, New Mexico, and San Antonio, Texas.
