Warren Rosser is a British-American artist whose expansive practice encompasses painting, sculpture, constructed objects, collage, and printmaking. Across more than five decades, Rosser has continually tested the boundaries of painting—where it begins and ends, how it occupies architectural space, and how color, material, pattern, and structure can transform a viewer's physical and perceptual experience.
Born in South Wales, Rosser studied at Cardiff College of Art before completing postgraduate study at the Royal College of Art in London. His early career developed during a fertile period in British contemporary art, and he moved to the United States in 1972, eventually settling in Kansas City.
Although trained as a painter, Rosser moved increasingly toward sculpture and mixed-media construction during the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. Rather than abandoning painting, he expanded its vocabulary into physical space. His works incorporated wood, fabric, carpet, industrial materials, found patterns, and constructed forms, frequently projecting from the wall or migrating onto the floor.
In 1998, Rosser returned more explicitly to painting, though with an understanding of the medium permanently altered by decades of working three-dimensionally. Store-bought fabrics and carpets became both surfaces and structures, while shaped and constructed supports challenged the conventional rectangle of the canvas. Even when working with traditional oil on stretched canvas, Rosser approaches a painting as a constructed object whose physical presence is as important as the image it carries.
Color has remained one of the central subjects of Rosser's work. His paintings frequently juxtapose saturated fields, subtle transitions, repeated bands, irregular geometries, and shifting spatial relationships. Color can flatten a composition or produce the illusion of deep space; adjacent hues appear to advance, recede, vibrate, or dissolve.
Printmaking provides another important arena for experimentation. Rosser's monoprints exploit the medium's capacity for layering transparent colors, repeating and altering forms, and allowing unexpected relationships to emerge through successive impressions.
At Haw Contemporary, Rosser presented Folding Space – New Monoprints in 2015, Loitering with Intent in 2017, Unexpected Consequences in 2018–19, Loose-threads in 2023, and Unexpected Occurrences in 2026. He also joined Armin Mühsam and Caleb Taylor for EDGE | CUT | PLAY in 2020–21.
Rosser has exhibited extensively in the United States and internationally. Solo institutional exhibitions include Repeat Offender at the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis, Hybrid View at the Albrecht-Kemper Museum of Art, and Alternate Tracking at the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts. Earlier in his career he exhibited at the Tate Gallery, Kunstmuseum Düsseldorf, Galleria del Cavallino in Venice, and the Edinburgh Festival.
Rosser joined the faculty of the Kansas City Art Institute in 1976 and became chair of its Painting Department in 1990, a position he held for twenty-eight years. As William T. Kemper Distinguished Professor of Painting and longtime department chair, he played a major role in shaping KCAI's nationally recognized painting program. He retired in 2018.
His career is distinguished by an unusually open definition of painting. Whether working with oil on canvas, patterned fabric, carpet, constructed forms, or layered prints, Rosser has consistently approached abstraction as both a visual and physical language.
