Hard Edge, Loose Ends brings together three artists whose work finds energy in the interplay of structure and unruliness. Across painting and ceramic sculpture, geometry meets gesture, repetition gives way to variation, and carefully constructed arrangements accommodate surprising departures. Order emerges through revision, improvisation, and the possibilities of materials.
Eric Sall brings contrasting visual languages into the same pictorial space. Patterns establish rhythms that gestures interrupt, while layers of paint reveal and conceal earlier decisions. Geometry, expressive marks, and echoes of familiar decorative forms sustain a lively exchange between the painting’s overall coherence and the independence of its parts.
Nate Fors builds paintings through improvisation and unexpected associations. Lines, shapes, and suggestive fragments accumulate, overlap, and change course, creating compositions whose organizing intelligence accommodates humor, ambiguity, and productive mischief.
In Shane Lutzk’s ceramic rings, a repeated geometric form becomes elastic and irregular. Loops stretch, fold, and turn, giving physical presence to the negotiation between a recognizable structure and its transformation.
Seen together, the works reveal how many forms that negotiation can take. A painted line finds an echo in a ceramic loop; a repeated shape in one work draws attention to an unexpected interruption in another. These connections invite viewers to move between the individual gesture and the larger arrangement, noticing how each changes the other. Throughout the exhibition, structure provides room for invention, and unruliness gives that structure its particular life.
