Ryan Fenchel is an American painter whose work explores symbols, signs, invented languages, diagrams, ritual, and the ways abstract forms can suggest meaning without resolving into fixed interpretation. Ryan Fenchel is an American painter whose work explores symbols, signs, invented languages, diagrams, ritual, and the ways abstract forms can suggest meaning without resolving into fixed interpretation. Drawing from architecture, heraldry, ancient artifacts, maps, religious imagery, and everyday objects, Fenchel creates paintings that feel simultaneously familiar and difficult to decipher.

His compositions are populated by recurring geometric and biomorphic forms—arches, vessels, columns, portals, ladders, shields, flames, suns, moons, plants, and other shapes that hover between representation and abstraction. These elements often appear to belong to an unknown symbolic system. They suggest diagrams, alphabets, ritual objects, or fragments of an invented mythology, yet resist being translated into a single narrative.

This ambiguity is central to Fenchel's practice. His paintings engage the human tendency to search for patterns and assign meaning to visual information, even when the underlying system remains inaccessible. A form may resemble an architectural structure in one painting and a figure or glyph in another. Familiar signs are simplified, repeated, rotated, mirrored, and recombined until their original associations become unstable.

Fenchel builds his paintings through an intuitive process of accumulation and revision. Layers of color, line, pattern, and form create surfaces that retain evidence of their construction while maintaining strong graphic clarity. His background in printmaking remains visible in the emphasis on shape, repetition, positive and negative space, and relationships between image and ground.

At Haw Contemporary, Fenchel has presented Plato's Oven (2019), The Adept Slept (2021–22), and Odd Array (2025). Across these exhibitions, his recurring symbolic forms have developed through references to philosophy, alchemy, allegory, vessels, botanical structures, celestial imagery, and the artist's understanding of studio practice as a process of discovery through uncertainty.

Fenchel has exhibited nationally and internationally in Los Angeles, Chicago, Kansas City, New York, Philadelphia, Berlin, Sarajevo, and Tokyo.

He received his BFA in Printmaking from the Kansas City Art Institute and his MFA in Art Theory & Practice from Northwestern University. He lives and works in Los Angeles.
